A Deer Hit My Car!

This is not my truck or LuAnn's car but the title is the call I got this morning soon after LuAnn headed east for Hillsboro.  We sure didn't expect that today!  I told her to come home and get my Dakota and she thought I said stay there and call the patrol.  After many hours passed it seemed and after many unanswered calls she called back and said I don't think they are coming, bring the truck and you can take the car home.

The state patrol finally showed up and she said the officer was great and sympathetic.  He said they are getting record calls on deer accidents right now.  I took the car to our lifelong friend Jason Tussey at Tussey Collision and Frame and he says the same thing.  He is backed up too.  He asked why we wouldn't space these out better?

It's funny, I just saw how this topic was my number one all time read blog.  Little has changed but the day and the year!  I would say she hit a 2-300 pounder right in the center of her left headlight, it swung it around and broke the heavy plastic wheel cover, the butt hit the door hard enough it leaks air now.  The front end shimmied noticeably on the way to the body shop.  LuAnn is a very good driver and had the reflexes to miss another potentially fatal accident.

I told Jason he has us well trained.  LuAnn picked up a handful of fur for evidence off the side of the road and put it in the cupholder.  He laughed on that one, we have a family story about a supposed deer accident with no evidence and a dog with fur that looks like a deer!  I forgot to ask but I bet it pushes $3000 for a claim.  It even broke our new $20 coffee mug and I have a story about that too!

The day LuAnn almost got hit head on took out the right headlight and today's deer took out the left one.  The deer cost farmers millions in crop damage and drivers millions in insurance claims.  It could have potentially killed her if it would have come through the windshield and the Rendezvous is built perfectly for that!

So I publicly thank her Guardian Angel, yes we believe in Saints and Angels as they help us every day.  We both laughed too bad it didn't happen to Old Red, my oldest Dakota but it would have really had to have been a bad day for her to be driving that thing!  It hit the newest vehicle in our fleet so we will just grab another vehicle and go.

We are blessed like that.

  1. Florine and I can certainly relate to your plight. On a Sunday evening in mid-November a deer hit our 2011 Chrysler 200. $8500 damage and a month in the body shop. Then another week in the dealership resolving engine mechanical issues.

On Thanksgiving our son came for a visit and on the way his home had a deer hit his 2012 Chevrolet Cruise. Also $8500 damage.

Earlier this fall, our granddaughter was on her way to school when she came to a complete as a deer was crossing the road. The deer also stopped and just looked at her. When she started up, the deer ran into the fender. Minor damage to the old clunker which my son resolved with a rubber mallet.

Needless to say it makes one a little skittish about driving, especially after dark.

  2. Wow, Ron, it's been awhile since we had one of these but we had a rash of them a few years ago. Sounds like prices have really went up and my $3000 is low!

The one that nearly totaled my prized 1990 Dakota in front of A&M Apple Farm came timely as everything under the hood was pretty well worn out and the repairs replaced the radiator, battery, water pump assembly, transmission cooler, AC condenstor and all the belts and hoses!

I smacked that one head on at 60 MPH and it pulled both fenders inward and the hood underneath. That locked everything up in seconds.

We have been blessed with no human injury on some pretty nasty hits.

  3. Does it mean there's a greater chance that the small pebble in my oats was a bit of antler?

when, what to to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a miniature crossover SUV, and eight tiny deers,
with a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be LuAnn.

More rapid than eagles her coursers they came,
And she whistled, and shouted, and call'd them by name:
"Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer, and Vixen!
"On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Dunder and Blixem!

"To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
"Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
    When they meet with an headlight, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
    ...

  5. Chimel, your brain is lively today! I hope my brain is that quick a week from Saturday but knowing myself it will be drained by that day! Brain drain you know is serious business in farming and blogging!

    Thanks for the great addition!

  7. When I read that my mom picked up a handful of fur and put it in the cup holder I almost lost it! By far the best laugh I have had all year!!!!!

  9. $3000 is too low. I had a deer run into the side of my car a few years ago and I did not even think it had damaged the car until I got home. $8000

  10. I know. I am old school. What I think costs a dollar is ten and what I think is a thousand is many times more. Who says there isn't inflation?

  11. How was the deer? Haha! I'm sorry, I just had to ask about the deer. By the way, it's a good thing that you got a claim for this kind of accident, I thought insurance will not cover accidents like this. You got an insurance claim and you got a funny story to tell, although your evidence might not really help a lot. Haha!

  14. Oh, what a relatable post! This post truly captures the unexpected challenges that can come with driving. It's a reminder of how unpredictable the road can be. I hope you're okay after the encounter with the deer! In situations like these, it's reassuring to know that there are options available, like sell damaged cars for cash. Dealing with the aftermath of an accident can be overwhelming, and having a way to efficiently turn your damaged vehicle into cash is a practical solution.
